Training Tomorrow’s Eye Health Heroes: Dr. Arunga’s Vision for Uganda
A Nation’s Sight in Crisis
Across sub-Saharan Africa, a critical shortage of skilled eye health workers is deepening the burden of avoidable blindness. The World Health Organization recommends at least 4 ophthalmologists per million people, but in Uganda, there is only 1 per million — just 40 ophthalmologists for over 40 million people. Even more alarming, half of these are based in the capital, leaving most rural and underserved regions without specialist care.
To fill this gap, Uganda relies heavily on non-ophthalmologist professionals like Ophthalmic Clinical Officers, Theatre Nurses, and Ophthalmic Assistants. These professionals are often the frontline providers of eye care in communities that would otherwise go without.
Our Response: Building Capacity Through Training
At Dr. Arunga’s Eye Hospital (DAEH), we believe real change begins with people. Since 2020, we’ve committed not only to treating eye conditions but also to training the next generation of eye care providers. One of our most impactful initiatives is the Ophthalmic Assistant Training Program, designed to equip young Ugandans with hands-on skills in just three months.
This program has now trained two cohorts of assistants who are already making a difference in their communities and in our hospital’s operations.
Opportunities for Uganda’s Brightest — Regardless of Background
The DAEH Ophthalmic Assistant Program is fully sponsored by our hospital board. It is designed for students who have completed their Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE) but lack the financial means to proceed to university. In a country where many promising students are blocked by economic barriers, our program provides a free, career-launching opportunity in health care.
These students not only gain vital clinical skills, but also find purpose, confidence, and a path to financial independence.
Real Lives, Real Impact: Success Stories from Our Graduates
Our graduates are already changing lives — starting with their own:
- Miraculous Akakikunda used her foundation at DAEH to advance to a Diploma in Nursing, building a deeper career in patient care.- Adele Muhalira, originally from the Democratic Republic of Congo, returned home to start an eye clinic, expanding the impact of our training across borders.- Zabayo Zakayo has become a skilled clinician and eye investigations officer at DAEH, supporting hundreds of patients through diagnostics and care.- Baluku Velentine, after working with us for over a year, has now enrolled in university to further his education and career.
These stories reflect the incredible potential of Uganda’s youth when given the opportunity to shine.
Our Vision for the Future – Help Us Scale
While our impact is growing, our reach is limited by funding. Currently, the program’s capacity is capped by the hospital’s budget. Yet the demand — for both eye care and educational opportunity — is massive.
We aim to:
- Increase annual enrollment from 10 to at least 30 students- Expand facilities for classroom and clinical training- Equip each student with uniforms, tools, and practical experience- Develop a national network of trained assistants supporting rural clinics
To realize this vision, we are seeking partners, donors, and sponsors who believe in equitable health care and youth empowerment.
> With the right support, we can turn this promising pilot into a national pipeline for eye health workers — and transform thousands of lives in the process.
Conclusion: From Hope to Impact
Every trained assistant is a step toward a healthier, more equitable Uganda. Every student we train brings sight, support, and care to people who might otherwise go without.
We invite you to be part of this story — not just as a reader, but as a partner in vision.
